The secrets to making teenage girl's happy!

Well if I knew what made teenage girls happy I'd bottle that right up, sell it, make millions and buy a villa in St. Barth's.

I can however, attempt to make a teenage girl happy by zhushing up her room a bit:)

In addition to divulging some of my sources,  I thought it would be fun to discuss how I go about designing a space and use this room as an example...

If you want to see the before and after pictures of this room first you can go here.

When starting a design plan, I usually begin with an inspiration piece usually it's a fabric, sometimes its a rug or even a piece of art. That inspiration piece comes from the client.  In this case I used the clients pinterest board and found this image.

pillows by Caitlin Wilson

I also found lots of animal prints and ghost chairs. We have one very stylish teenager here!

Now I didn't use any of the above fabrics in the room but I let them be my guide in creating a color scheme. In this case turquoise, pink and grey. I also wanted the room to feel fresh, young, crisp and not too trendy and well-edited.

Okay, moving on, I remembered this fun little rug from Dash and Albert that I've always wanted to use. It reminds me of ice cream ---  I think it's the name - the Neapolitan.

I also found this colorful print by Britt Bass

With these pieces in place the other elements just fell into place.

I definitely wanted to include an animal print but I didn't want it to be overpowering and I wanted to keep with our turquoise, grey and pink color scheme --- luck would have it she had pinned this on her board as well.

I think she was dreaming of built-ins but if I forgot to mention there was a VERY limited budget for this room (meaning nothing custom) which I was totally on board with because what if our client changes her mind next week, right? And to boot this room redo was accomplished in less than four weeks as a surprise for this lucky gal!

So instead of papering her whole room in this Thibaut wall covering we chose a focal wall where her bed would sit and we then painted the rest of the room in a coordinating color... silver drops by Behr. Her dad in fact lovingly painted the room for her!

In addition to the "pretty" I equally take into consideration the function of the space.

This room was going to be used for 1) getting serious about homework and 2) getting serious about hitting the town with friends:)
Hence the desk/vanity situation I have going on.

Here is where she can sit and do her homework and with the large mirror above can blow dry her hair, apply makeup and primp!

I absolutely love this desk by Pottery Barn and the large mirror above was found at Home Goods.

All the accessories on the desk are from the Container Store. The silver lamp was from the Land of Nod and the large turquoise flower art also another Home Goods find.

The draperies are from Pottery Barn Teen with black out lining.  I know first hand that teenagers like to sleep in so this was chosen on purpose. The bedding is also from Pottery Barn.

The quilt, and black chevron tray? Home Goods. I like to always have a touch of black in every room!

Headboard from Ballard Designs $199, lamps from Home Goods and vintage bedside table from Vintage Home in Paoli, PA.

The toughest part of the room for me was choosing the art. Art as we all know is personal to everyone but I didn't over think it too much and went with fun pieces!

The colorful macaroons came from the
Paper Source just a sheet of wrapping paper that I framed.

The grey piece came from Home Goods and the ice cream print came from the Land of Nod.

Now I did lie a teensy bit and did customize a few things. Her euro shams were monogrammed at Tibbar Tibbar in Wayne PA.

And wanna know the secret to making your bed pillows look lush and full? Use two pillow inserts!! Honestly, it's life changing.

And the turquoise pillows found on the bed and ghost chair are this custom fabric avail to the trade .

Robert Allen's spaced out

There you have it!

Here's the before

And the After

Happy New Year, chair lust and budget-friendly decor

Happy New Year! Hope your holidays were both fun and fabulous. Back to reality today and I'll have to admit I'm sooo ready.

Everyone's sharing their New Year's resolutions so I thought I'd weigh in here. Why not? Bare with me. I only have two:) and then we'll get to some decorating stuff.

My first resolution..

Pay more attention to the important things in life.

Years ago when I was working as a publisher of a magazine I was in NYC and was rushing to meet my boss across a crowded  hotel lobby. I was running late for a very important meeting.

As I reached my boss he had a big smile on his face and said "Do you realize that you literally just bumped into Nelson Mandela"?

Whaaat? As I was racing across the lobby I bumped into an older gentlemen and stopped to say sorry and we made some small talk. And I went on my merry little way.

I had no idea I had just rubbed up against greatness.

I turned around and stared across the lobby. My boss was right. It wasn't until I stepped back and took in the whole scene did I realize what was going on. It was a life lesson. Sometimes we need to step back and survey the whole situation to realize what's important in life. (I have been thinking about this moment a lot since his passing).

Okay, onto number two --- more concrete and way less impressive.

Try to eat vegan-ish.

You are what you eat. End of story. I've been vegan in the past and I'm telling you I never felt better when I ate better. Eating real, unprocessed food gives you more energy and helps you think more clearly. If think clearer and have more energy,  you have more time to notice the important things in life. See the connection??:)

Okay, moving onto a MUCH lighter subject.

Current room obsession. It's the color I'm in love with.

Feel free to discuss.

Have I shared with you that I have a full-on serious chair addiction?

My current chair loves include the below. I have access to them for very reasonable prices and am jumping at the bit to place them!! Anyone, anyone?

Thoughts????? Do you love as much as I do???

 Last but not least...

Stylish for both your home and your wallet.

Lands End Bedding

I would buy the duvet only and zhush it up with:
White shams with navy trim, add a large fancy monogram and call it a day for a simple clean look...
or
Possibly Schumacher's chaing mai pillow or a rich velvet in an emerald green or hot pink... oh the possibilities!
I don't know but this could be fun!

Land End

Stumped on how to freshen up a room inexpensively....

Deals and steals in home design and a pink flamingo miracle!

In my pursuit of a well-designed home I sometimes stumble upon some great home design pieces that are both beautiful and inexpensive so I'd like to share them with you.

But you'll have to bare with me a bit so I can share something of a decorator moment with you:)

So I was charged with a new project.

Now I ask you how am I going to improve upon this girly perfection?

I mean, really?

So I added these bedside lamps.

Land of Nod

Cute, but it's still not rocking my world and I'm feelin' the pressure because this little gal I'm designing this room for is such a fashionista. AND...  when I came over to chat about her room we automatically hit it off. We were instant BFF's. And I happen to know the other plastics in her posse Audrey S and Ella S. And I swear if I were 3 again (and I most certainly am not) this would be my posse. I imagine we would play dress up, Barbies and swoon over Sophia the First..

So you can feel my pressure  ... right?

So I hit the marketplace on a rainy gloomy day to see if I could create a show stopper in the room by reinventing this piece.

And then this happened.

BAM!

Hand to God as I was standing in the showroom and this fabric magically appeared on that gray gloomy day the sun came out, the rain stopped and I swear I heard a faint hallelujah in the background.

 Flamingo Fabric on ottoman
Pink on chair with white piping.

Perfectly in sync with wall art and window treatments (trust me on this)
Now that's a happy ending any Disney princess would be proud of!

Some of my favorite inexpensive go-to's in home décor

Kitchen and Mudroom Rug

You know that spot in your kitchen near the sink or that area where your dog and kids track in mud?

This is the perfect rug it's bold, modern and fun and there's not a lot of white space in the rug so it hides dirt and stains and if it were to stain? It's indoor outdoor and you just hose it down.

Dash & Albert
Black and white diamond indoor/outdoor rug
GREAT for all those white kitchens!

I have it in my house under the sink and I swear I haven't touched it in almost a year!

Small flushmount

Have a long narrow hallway, small mudroom or entry?

These are clean and modern ... and they come with a chain so you can use as a pendant!

Shades of Light
$149
Source -- can't remember where I got this picture anyone?

Console Table

Need a long, narrow console table? Maybe to anchor a TV or to put behind a large sofa? I read about this table somewhere (can't remember) and have used it bc it has a depth of only 12".

Here it is in distressed black

$349

Pillows
Please Pottery barn I beg of you never to discontinue these
I know a lot of you know about these but they're great pillows to fill in amongst your designer pillows. Love the jute braiding to add just a bit of texture.

Pottery Barn

Okay this was just a sampling I promise to try and add a great find to each and every post. So stay tuned!!
