Tweaking a client's space

I have this awesome new client whose style is what I would call sophisticated cottage. She called me in to help her tweak her space and "finish" the room.

Easy job for me... she has great taste.

So I'm going to show you where we started and where we are now.

Warning: not a dramatic transformation since where we started was pretty fab.

Here's where we started

Here's a peek at where we are now

Host chairs - Restoration Hardware
Light- Horchow
Monogram - Tibbar Tibbar Wayne, PA
Topiary - trade item

We replaced the heavy, wrought iron light fixture with a pretty chandelier from Horchow. We removed the piano and bird print from the back wall and are commissioning a new piece of art for that space. We replaced the white queen ann chairs with square cane back chairs for a more formal feel and added host chairs with monogrammed slip covers.

Here's where we started with the china cabinet

Where we are now

Square back cane chairs - Restoration Hardware
Clients own pottery and coral from Pottery Barn

This was a simple fix. All we did was streamline her collection of plates and pitchers and made the vignette symmetrical and added the pretty, modern geometric Thibaut wallpaper to the back of the cabinet. All we need to do now is change out the hardware for a more sleek look.

Here's where we started on the other side of the room

Here's where we are now

Table lamps - Lighting by Design
Mirror and box - Home Goods

We removed the white chest and mirrored frames and replaced them with a more modern chest and an on-trend round mirror. This really added a lot of warmth and texture to the room:)

We still have some more updates to make so stay tuned and
thanks for reading!!! xoxo

The secrets to making teenage girl's happy!

Well if I knew what made teenage girls happy I'd bottle that right up, sell it, make millions and buy a villa in St. Barth's.

I can however, attempt to make a teenage girl happy by zhushing up her room a bit:)

In addition to divulging some of my sources,  I thought it would be fun to discuss how I go about designing a space and use this room as an example...

If you want to see the before and after pictures of this room first you can go here.

When starting a design plan, I usually begin with an inspiration piece usually it's a fabric, sometimes its a rug or even a piece of art. That inspiration piece comes from the client.  In this case I used the clients pinterest board and found this image.

pillows by Caitlin Wilson

I also found lots of animal prints and ghost chairs. We have one very stylish teenager here!

Now I didn't use any of the above fabrics in the room but I let them be my guide in creating a color scheme. In this case turquoise, pink and grey. I also wanted the room to feel fresh, young, crisp and not too trendy and well-edited.

Okay, moving on, I remembered this fun little rug from Dash and Albert that I've always wanted to use. It reminds me of ice cream ---  I think it's the name - the Neapolitan.

I also found this colorful print by Britt Bass

With these pieces in place the other elements just fell into place.

I definitely wanted to include an animal print but I didn't want it to be overpowering and I wanted to keep with our turquoise, grey and pink color scheme --- luck would have it she had pinned this on her board as well.

I think she was dreaming of built-ins but if I forgot to mention there was a VERY limited budget for this room (meaning nothing custom) which I was totally on board with because what if our client changes her mind next week, right? And to boot this room redo was accomplished in less than four weeks as a surprise for this lucky gal!

So instead of papering her whole room in this Thibaut wall covering we chose a focal wall where her bed would sit and we then painted the rest of the room in a coordinating color... silver drops by Behr. Her dad in fact lovingly painted the room for her!

In addition to the "pretty" I equally take into consideration the function of the space.

This room was going to be used for 1) getting serious about homework and 2) getting serious about hitting the town with friends:)
Hence the desk/vanity situation I have going on.

Here is where she can sit and do her homework and with the large mirror above can blow dry her hair, apply makeup and primp!

I absolutely love this desk by Pottery Barn and the large mirror above was found at Home Goods.

All the accessories on the desk are from the Container Store. The silver lamp was from the Land of Nod and the large turquoise flower art also another Home Goods find.

The draperies are from Pottery Barn Teen with black out lining.  I know first hand that teenagers like to sleep in so this was chosen on purpose. The bedding is also from Pottery Barn.

The quilt, and black chevron tray? Home Goods. I like to always have a touch of black in every room!

Headboard from Ballard Designs $199, lamps from Home Goods and vintage bedside table from Vintage Home in Paoli, PA.

The toughest part of the room for me was choosing the art. Art as we all know is personal to everyone but I didn't over think it too much and went with fun pieces!

The colorful macaroons came from the
Paper Source just a sheet of wrapping paper that I framed.

The grey piece came from Home Goods and the ice cream print came from the Land of Nod.

Now I did lie a teensy bit and did customize a few things. Her euro shams were monogrammed at Tibbar Tibbar in Wayne PA.

And wanna know the secret to making your bed pillows look lush and full? Use two pillow inserts!! Honestly, it's life changing.

And the turquoise pillows found on the bed and ghost chair are this custom fabric avail to the trade .

Robert Allen's spaced out

There you have it!

Deals and steals in home design and a pink flamingo miracle!

In my pursuit of a well-designed home I sometimes stumble upon some great home design pieces that are both beautiful and inexpensive so I'd like to share them with you.

But you'll have to bare with me a bit so I can share something of a decorator moment with you:)

So I was charged with a new project.

Now I ask you how am I going to improve upon this girly perfection?

I mean, really?

So I added these bedside lamps.

Land of Nod

Cute, but it's still not rocking my world and I'm feelin' the pressure because this little gal I'm designing this room for is such a fashionista. AND...  when I came over to chat about her room we automatically hit it off. We were instant BFF's. And I happen to know the other plastics in her posse Audrey S and Ella S. And I swear if I were 3 again (and I most certainly am not) this would be my posse. I imagine we would play dress up, Barbies and swoon over Sophia the First..

So you can feel my pressure  ... right?

So I hit the marketplace on a rainy gloomy day to see if I could create a show stopper in the room by reinventing this piece.

And then this happened.

BAM!

Hand to God as I was standing in the showroom and this fabric magically appeared on that gray gloomy day the sun came out, the rain stopped and I swear I heard a faint hallelujah in the background.

 Flamingo Fabric on ottoman
Pink on chair with white piping.

Perfectly in sync with wall art and window treatments (trust me on this)
Now that's a happy ending any Disney princess would be proud of!

Some of my favorite inexpensive go-to's in home décor

Kitchen and Mudroom Rug

You know that spot in your kitchen near the sink or that area where your dog and kids track in mud?

This is the perfect rug it's bold, modern and fun and there's not a lot of white space in the rug so it hides dirt and stains and if it were to stain? It's indoor outdoor and you just hose it down.

Dash & Albert
Black and white diamond indoor/outdoor rug
GREAT for all those white kitchens!

I have it in my house under the sink and I swear I haven't touched it in almost a year!

Small flushmount

Have a long narrow hallway, small mudroom or entry?

These are clean and modern ... and they come with a chain so you can use as a pendant!

Shades of Light
$149
Source -- can't remember where I got this picture anyone?

Console Table

Okay today I'm spilling the beans...

Guess what three items I will not and can not live without?

3M Command Strips

amazon
Are you still hanging art with a hammer and nails?

That's just crazy talk. You need to try command strips they securely hold large pictures, lightweight mirrors, art canvases and pretty much anything you need to hang on the wall.

I LOVE them. Let me say that again. I LOVE them.

No stress or pressure about hanging something and damaging a wall or changing my mind a week later ... just pull off the velcro strips no problem. But please read the directions and I wouldn't hang anything crazy heavy with  them either. You can read more about them here.

Crazy Awesome Rug Pad

overstock

In my opinion,  this is the perfect rug pad. Not too thick not too thin, holds onto that rug like it's his job. Perfect and reasonably priced.

And for the Outdoor Room?
Six plants that repel mosquitoes

Oh yeah ....  it's summer.  I don't know about you but mosquitoes love me. I can't go outside without coming back in with at least ten new bites. The solution? Plant flowers that mosquitoes hate!

So I'll be planting these babies this summer on my deck and I'll let you know if it works:)

Lavender
Lemon Balm
Marigolds
Basil
Catnip
Citronella Grass
You can read the article here. I found it on my local gardening supply website Keystone Gardens.

How do you get your house summer-ready? I'd love to know!

Three Indestructible Design Elements You Can't Live Without!

Now there are way more than three that I use but I thought this was a good jumping off point and a great way for you to come back and read more posts. If you have kids age 4 or 40, or kids of the cute and furry variety this post is for you!

Natural Fiber Rugs

There are so many fun choices for area rugs these days, but I still love natural fiber rugs.  These rugs add texture, are durable, and rarely compete with anything else in a room. Also, I may have a slight addiction to layering a smaller geometric, shag or over-dyed rug on top, under a coffee table, or on an angle to add an extra layer of oomph.

After ten years of experimenting with everything from jute to sisal to seagrass. I have decided the half-panama seagrass is my fiber of choice.

It's super easy to clean and has a very neutral look. I use seagrass under my kitchen table so it has to be custom made and extremely durable.

I buy my custom seagrass rugs at Natural Area Rugs which you can buy here. They are reasonably priced and are quick to ship. Because of the low price point, if the rug gets destroyed I never get the guilts about replacing it. Don't like the texture of these fiber rugs? They also carry wool versions.

And by the way, if you are still coveting the diamond pattern Stark natural fiber rug Pottery Barn is now carrying this rug. You can buy it here.

I beg of you, before you make a decision on natural fiber rugs I highly recommend you read this article here by Lauren Liess of Pure Style Home. This is the most thorough article I have ever seen on the subject. Ever. And as a bonus she is an amazing designer.

Indoor/Outdoor Fabric

I use indoor/outdoor fabrics for high traffic areas in my house. Why you ask?
Do you know this guy?
I can't seem to shake him.  He has a keen sense of knowing when his older siblings leave a sharpie laying around. Did you know sharpies come in this shade of aubergine? Neither did I until I saw it all over his head.  In addition, he graffitied all over my newly upholstered leopard ottoman.

It's a good thing that ottoman was covered in an indoor/outdoor fabric or else someone would have been in time-out for a really long time and not sucking on a lollipop (see above)  like he doesn't have sharpie all over his face.

Incident number two:
My entryway chair is covered in 100% silk fabric. It was BEAUTIFUL until someone who shall remain nameless came in and placed their wet boots and coat on my chair. Gulp. That was the end of that. RIP beautiful chair.

Let me stop and share something with you here ... these are just possessions and there are much bigger problems in life so I don't freak out that much about these types of things. I just try to avoid any possible heart pumping incidents.

Indoor/outdoor fabrics come in so many different styles, textures and patterns now. What's great about these fabrics? You can clean them with mild detergent and water (each manufacturer will have their own instructions).

The mother of all indoor/outdoor fabrics is Sunbrella.

Lily Pulitzer which can be bought here at Aubusson Home.

Trina Turk for Schumacher is another company that carries these durable fabrics as well. If you look around you will find one that can work for your project.

Abstract Art

Abstracts are my new obsession. I love art and really feel that art makes your home special and meaningful.

Art is many different things to many different people. Whether its a flea market treasure, home goods find, a large blown up picture of your child, a painting your grandfather did or a commissioned piece from a local or nationally know artist. Art is the cherry on top of your sundae. Your house just isn't complete without it.
I love abstracts because many of the rooms I decorate are filled with traditional pieces and I believe you need to go a little crazy sometimes and mix it up. I love the juxtaposition of traditional with modern, shiny with distressed, and antique with contemporary for that matter. It's so important in my opinion to vary your design elements. But, if you don't trust me check out some of these lovelies.

Source?

Honey Collins Interiors
Jamie Meares from Lonny Magazine
Lucy Williams Interiors
And by the way if a sharpie makes its way onto one of these pieces... frankly, who the heck would notice? Hence, indestructible.

OK , Now Onto Totally Random Stuff

Heading to NYC soon for the weekend with a girlfriend of mine. We are staying in the village ...you know, where all the girls are like 7ft tall, looking all modelly and stuff. My friend and I are going to try and look at least 5'4 and dress cool.

Well, this friend of mine gave me a few tips on how to get that natural makeup look and I thought I'd share because I swear they kinda work.

Now, mind you this is not Kardashian type makeup. This is more like Kristen Wiig from Bridesmaids when she wakes up next to John Hamm and says " Oh, I just wake up like this". Remember that line? No? Turn on HBO its probably on...

Have you ever used this stuff?

Horrible name but awesome concealer. You're supposed to put it under your eyes, on your chin, forehead and a line down your nose to "contour". Try it. You can buy it here.

How about this mascara from Clinique?

Works great so natural and NEVER smudges. I LOVE this stuff for everyday. You can buy it here.

One last item from drugstore...

Spray a little on your hands rub on your face and it gives your skin a natural glow. love it. You can buy it at your local drug store. Don't be afraid to use.  You will NOT turn orange.

Last random item, this image from from Kay Douglas at the Splendid Sass... I am in love.

Oh my God! You're still reading this? good for you .....
