Before and After Villanova Residence

Villanova Residence

Before and After

Here is a project that was finished awhile ago but we just got around to photographing.

I absolutely adore working with this family and I'm so appreciative that they allowed me this opportunity and they trusted my vision!

The first room I helped transform was their cozy family room den

Here is the BEFORE

AFTER

Family Den

A study in neutrals...

Beautiful new built-ins were added to give height and dimension and architectural interest to the room. We also added brass library sconces from Visual Comfort and roman shades with simple greek key trim.

I love the warmth of the worn leather sofa from Restoration Hardware and the coolness of the dark gray walls. It's truly one of my favorite combinations.

We chose chelsea gray walls paired with lots of white for high contrast and to add depth and light to the space.

We also mixed metals and textures in styling the bookshelves... brass, mercury glass, lacquer, driftwood and creamy white objects.

It's all in the details...

We added a pair of mirrors flanking the bar area to make the space feel larger and reflect light from the large picture window.

The bar cabinetry was painted high-gloss white and the hardware was upgraded to a brass faucet and marble counter tops and back splash were added.

did u spy camera? need to photoshop these pics ha!

Loved keeping this space neutral. I think most people like my colorful designs but I do love designing neutral spaces too!

Moving right along ...scenes from  the "before" Dining Room

Dining Room NOW! WOW!

We kept the window treatments and most of my client's beautiful furniture so we jazzed up the space with green grass cloth from Phillip Jeffries, new host chairs with pillow fabric from Aerin Lauder's line for Lee Jofa  and colorful modern art. The grasscloth has now become the star of the show!!

We also upgraded the lighting with classic yet modern fixtures from Visual Comfort and leopard lamps from Dana Gibson.

Table by oopmh sits next to window seat

And let's not forget this lovely little powder with Scalamandre and a striped roman...

Tweaking a client's space

I have this awesome new client whose style is what I would call sophisticated cottage. She called me in to help her tweak her space and "finish" the room.

Easy job for me... she has great taste.

So I'm going to show you where we started and where we are now.

Warning: not a dramatic transformation since where we started was pretty fab.

Here's where we started

Here's a peek at where we are now

Host chairs - Restoration Hardware
Light- Horchow
Monogram - Tibbar Tibbar Wayne, PA
Topiary - trade item

We replaced the heavy, wrought iron light fixture with a pretty chandelier from Horchow. We removed the piano and bird print from the back wall and are commissioning a new piece of art for that space. We replaced the white queen ann chairs with square cane back chairs for a more formal feel and added host chairs with monogrammed slip covers.

Here's where we started with the china cabinet

Where we are now

Square back cane chairs - Restoration Hardware
Clients own pottery and coral from Pottery Barn

This was a simple fix. All we did was streamline her collection of plates and pitchers and made the vignette symmetrical and added the pretty, modern geometric Thibaut wallpaper to the back of the cabinet. All we need to do now is change out the hardware for a more sleek look.

Here's where we started on the other side of the room

Here's where we are now

Table lamps - Lighting by Design
Mirror and box - Home Goods

We removed the white chest and mirrored frames and replaced them with a more modern chest and an on-trend round mirror. This really added a lot of warmth and texture to the room:)

We still have some more updates to make so stay tuned and
thanks for reading!!! xoxo

Four things under $30 that changed my life and more client progress on client's neutral, dark gray room...

I hate to iron. In fact I NEVER iron.
I hate to look wrinkled even more.
Enter...

My Little Steamer

HSN
$29.99

I use it for all my clothes and to steam wrinkles out of draperies.
Does it work,  you ask?
Like a charm.

Bobby Brown's
Pot Rouge Lips and Cheeks
in Pale Pink 11

bobbi brown
$26.99
Looks a lot like clown makeup but looks so natural on!

Best. Hairspray. Ever

$14.99 available at drugstores everywhere

Lavender Vanilla oil post shower.
European women treat themselves to crèmes and oils and really take care of their skin. When I use the oil I feel kinda worldly and exotic. And it smells so good and I swear it relaxes me!!:) Hence the name SLEEP.
And just a dab will do!

 Bath and Body works
$16.99

Okay so the construction is complete on my client's room. Fireplace, built-ins, lighting, and bar hardware and counter top installed. But we still have a looooong way to go.

The feel of this room is traditional with a few modern yet sophisticated touches. All fabrics and upholstery are either leather, crypton,  sunbrella or coated because they have 3 small, beautiful kids under the age of 7.

I stopped in today so I thought I would show you the latest and greatest!
And show you where it all started.

And of course in typical fashion these are crappy iphone pictures.

Bar area BEFORE

 NOW

Cabinet was painted high gloss white. Marble counter top and brass hardware was added.
Walls were painted Chelsea grey by Ben Moore.

Oh and the baby seat? by GRACO.
I swear this client has the cutest sweetest kids ever.... just like her:)

Fireplace BEFORE

Fireplace Now

Plank Board was added and westport sconces by Circa Lighting.
I kept the remote control in there cause I'm keepin it real!

Sofa area Before

NOW

Built-ins were added along with really cool sconces also from Circa Lighting.

Now don't you worry your pretty little heads. These shelves are not styled yet -- sometimes I bring stuff from my house to give a client an idea of how we're going to style the shelves before I actually go shopping.

AND... she's hosting Easter so she will have some stuff to occupy the shelves:)

Chesterfield and coffee table both found at RH outlet

So we need to style the shelves and add a few finishing touches but the best part to be added will be these amazing window treatments... this is our inspiration!

It's gonna be awesome!!

I'm just so happy this amazing family is back in their room enjoying it after some serious construction. I can't wait for them to celebrate Easter with their family and relax and enjoy their new space!!

How to set a simple holiday table...

Are you hosting a holiday fete?

You are? Perfect. This post will be right up your alley.

You're not?
That's ok --me either:))

But if I were, I think I'd choose a simple table setting. With all the crazy stress of shopping, wrapping, baking, and kids jumping out of their skin I think I'd like to sit down to a calm, serene, non-fussy table.

All of these table settings can be created by heading to your backyard or local supermarket. Easy, right?

You could print out sheet music from your computer on card stock with your favorite Christmas songs and place them under your plates and add fresh greens cut from your garden.

.
Too cumbersome?
How about heading to your backyard and clipping a few evergreens and placing them under a vase or drinking glass turned upside down.

Or heading to the supermarket buying greens and purchasing a few chartreuse Christmas balls and scattering them around your table.

Eddie Ross

While your at the supermarket you could pick up some fresh rosemary and fashion the sprigs into little wreaths with some green wire tied with a twine bow.

Let's face it we'll all be going to the market one more time why not go to Trader Joes, Whole Foods or Wegmans and pick up a few live topiaries or lush wreaths and create the tablescapes you see below.

And last but not least, how about these two simple settings?
Cut greens in champagne flutes.

Cut Greens tied with twine and cinnamon sticks.

Would you like some more simple hosting tips?

Well your in luck! Abby from Abby M. Interiors wrote a great post on simple entertaining. It's a MUST read!

You can read her tips here!

Speaking of simple yet pretty .... these crisp white panels were just installed in two different client's houses one with a lavender and chartreuse green trim.

They are living in the same house as these fab stools!

The other with a navy and white greek key trim.

These are sharing the spotlight with this awesome setup

Serena and Lilly racing stripe chair SO amazing in person:)

Adoring them both!!

And I had to share my newest loves. How about these two little pretty bedside lamps from Restoration Hardware kids?

Well there you have it! Last post before this holiday business begins!!

So Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to you and your families! Best wishes for a happy, healthy, and safe 2014!

My dog broke my computer, black trimmings and client updates

And we're back.

I went radio silent for a bit last week because my 70 pound golden doodle was lounging on the sofa next to my computer and stretched his legs and BAM! Computer hit the floor smashing my screen.

Oh well, luckily the screen was covered by a two-year warranty I have absolutely no recollection of purchasing but must pat myself on the back for having the foresight to do so. I really do surprise myself sometimes:)

Anyhoo, I've got lots to get too...
I know I should be obsessing over holiday decorating and gift-giving.

 But I'm not.

So I thought I'd share my current obsession ...  black trimmings and I'm not talking for the tree.

All images via pinterest

I know I've touched upon this subject in my last post.

But I'm thinking a  great way to dabble in this rich and glam black paint thang is to start with one room and paint out the windows (they have to be wood with wood inserts), french door or trim in one room and see what you think. Like we learned in kindergarten just a dab will do.

But, I'll betcha a million dollars you'll love it. I know it's scary but it's just paint, right? I'd love for you to take the plunge in your own home and send me pictures of your project. I have a few clients who are almost convinced!!! Hoping to share their progress in the new year.

Speaking of clients....

I've got a big WOW factor planned for this big, empty indigo blue wall!
I first saw this artwork on Calling it Home's blog and have been dreaming about using it ever since.

Four of these babies on either side of the window.

HELLO MAJOR IMPACT!!!

You can buy these prints or other fabulous ones from the amazingly talented Jennifer at the Pink Pagoda's etsy shop hereOnce they're
 hung I'll share!

One last client update .... You know I 've been singing the praises of Crypton fabric for clients who have small children, muddy dogs and messy husbands.

I just went to check on the progress of a family room where we covered two chairs in a greyish linen crypton fabric and there has been red wine,  baby spit-up and messy, grimy snack-filled hands all over these chairs and guess what???

They look brand new!!

Here's a looksie. Now we 're doing some MAJOR construction in this room so I won't share the whole room pics yet but here's a sneak peek.

Here's the awesome crypton chairs -- do you see that drink table in between from Bliss studio??

here

It's a fabulous, sturdy and stylish brass table for those of you with small kids. It's heavy and won't tip over like a garden seat and wont break like a glass table yet it's stylish funky and modern!

The yellow paint will be replaced with

DRAMA!!!!

Benjamin Moore's Chelsea grey - a deep rich grey paint. Who knows we might even go crazy and paint the trim the same color in high gloss. If not we're going with a crisp white!!

We are installing built-ins on either side of a window painted white or grey with this sconce above the shelves.

These sconces will go on either side of the fireplace in brass.

This Flush mount will light up the ceiling

All available from Circa Lighting.

This ikat fabric will make an appearance by way of a few pillows mixed in with some grey leopard ones.

Beacon Hill

And the fabric to the far right will serve as trim on the neutral curtains.

This table in a dark rich wood

And this classic sofa

will be paired with these ottomans.

Thoughts, questions, concerns??

I think I may want to move in after I get finished with this space.

Happy Shopping and Decorating and when your done please come by and do my house!!

A design board and a lighting dilemma...

I told you about my fun and color-friendly client, right? ... you know the one that I'm designing two seating areas for? You can read more about the seating arrangement here.

Well, here's her design board. Check her out ....

Totally family friendly yet fun and colorful.
One side of the room is designed for TV watching and will have a crazy colorful abstract and comfy seating for a family of four. The art will tie in all of the colors in this room (pillows and rugs are just examples not the real thang).

The other side of the room will have the armless four-chair (love these chairs btw) seating arrangement perfect for adult entertaining. It will also include a huge gallery wall that will be filled with family photos to make for an awesome conversation piece.

A piece similar to this is also going to make an appearance.

It was her mothers and we're going to fill it with family heirlooms and photos.

And did I mention this client o'mine is extremely creative and talented? She owns her own company called Life Images and they make the most amazing wedding videos. If you know anyone about to get married... check this out.

Also, I'm working on finding the perfect pendant shade for another client... here are the contenders:

Restoration Hardware
Horchow
Curry & Company

circa

Circa

I'm really drawn to black shades lately. I think we may go with the black... am loving the look and the price is right!

Yep, black it is!

Eight Secrets to Styling your Bookshelves!

source

1) When styling your bookcase be sure to include elements that are meaningful to you. On a more practical note, make sure you measure the shelves to be sure what you want to include will actually fit the space.

In the below version (which the owner kept in place) the teapot and cups were a gift from someone special. The silver plate and crystal glasses were her mothers. And a few of the very old books were her dad's.

2) Should you paint or paper the back of your shelves?

The answer is yes when you want to add color to a room or to pop the items placed on your shelves. When I came for the consultation, I noticed a lot of the items my client wanted to include were white so I advised her to paint the shelves a  soft gray.

Here are more examples here...

here

decorpad.com

here

3) Place the larger and/or most important items on the shelves first.

You can see my work midway through below. I placed some bigger items in the center and some off-center and just played around with them as I went.

4) Place like colors and groupings together.

I layered the clients glasses together and also similar color books together.

6) Need extra storage? Use baskets. This client didn't need extra storage. She placed most of her books behind closed doors. But if she wanted to add baskets I would add them to the  four bottom shelves.

These are some of my faves...
wisteria

something more rustic?

wisteria
Or more of a sophisticated office look?
restoration hardware

7) After you place your large items on the shelves start filling in with books. Make sure you stack them both vertically and horizontally. Don't like the color of the binding? Just turn the books around so the pages are facing out.

8) Edit, Edit, Edit. Make sure there is room for your eye to rest and that there is some space to breathe on the shelf so you can really notice the important book titles, items and other goodies!

Here are my three looks again in case you missed them....

And the winner winner chicken dinner ...

Guest post...

Looking to give an old, outdated piece of furniture a more modern look?

Well, I have a very talented designer friend, Shannon Duzy, who is a fabulous do-it-yourselfer and loves to tackle projects like painting furniture on her own. So I hope you enjoy her guest post on ...

How To Make Your Own Chalk Paint

Hi there! Shannon Duzy from Duzy Designs here and I had several pieces of furniture in my home that needed some serious painting.  I wanted to paint the furniture with chalk paint because I knew there was no prep work needed and the paint sticks to the furniture very well.

So I did some research on chalk paint. I found an easy recipe: use one cup of latex paint in any color and finish (flat, semigloss, etc.) and then add 2 tablespoons of unsanded grout.

product used

The grout makes the paint very thick and the finish very durable. I use Johnsons clear wax as a top coat and sealer.

I use this chalk paint on every project because you don't have to sand the furniture and can easily mix the paint in a red solo cup which makes clean up easy. Here is a piece I painted with my chalk paint recipe. So go ahead and give it a try yourself!

During
Finished piece

Hope you enjoyed this do-it-yourself project!! Until next time ...

My Design Work

Oh good, you're back! Remember this situation?

Let's circle back to the new elements. In every design I try my best to re-purpose, reuse and recycle but there are times when you need to add a new element or two to finish off a room.

I have L O V E D this  hummingbird and vine pattern since it appeared here in elle decor June 2010.

Had to have it. It's by Cole & Son and you can find it here.

I chose the wallpaper because my chairs were mostly hard surface wood-based. Not enough impact and I wanted to surround myself in this wallpaper. Every time I pass it by it just makes me smile -- it's so cheery and the birds? well, they're just so happy. Afraid of wallpaper? Not a problem. Frame it. As done here in an office designed by Vanessa De Vergas.

Trust me you will love it.

The new head chairs were found for an absolute steal at the Restoration Hardware outlet. I could not pass them by. And that's all I'll say about that. Well, I'll also say they're so versatile these chairs can go just about anywhere in my home which in my book is a justifiable purchase.

Mirror. There was a time I was obsessed with Trumeau mirrors. Now not so much but I still think they are so beautiful.  It looked like this at one point. Kinda drab, no?

So guess what? Yep, you nailed it, I painted that mirror. And here it is in its all its glorious frenchy self. Mirror was purchased right here LOCAL at Domicile

I've received a few emails regarding the orange and green floral arrangement that appears in practically every picture.

That arrangement is like my own elf on the shelf I move him around practically every night from room to room. Why? because I adore that arrangement. It may be time for a new bowl/vessel but for now I'm making it work. I had this piece designed by the amazing LOCAL floral designers at Valley Forge Flowers about eight years ago and it is still in fabulous shape.

Ok, I know you are all on pins and needles waiting to hear the focus of my next post. Next time we'll discuss ... BUYING LOCAL!!! And I'm not talking produce here people.
